It's time to kickoff the Salvation Army’s annual Red Kettle fundraiser. Volunteers ring bells the area to raise money for Salvation Army programs.
"There are many folks who have already been very vulnerable when they've lost work or lost hours or maybe they've experienced some illness, so they're already vulnerable and strained and many are going through real financial crisis,” said Major Mark Harwell.
Major Mark Harwell is the Area Commander for the Salvation Army and said since the pandemic, they’ve seen a lot more people who are in need.
"We've been kind of hunkered down a little bit so we know that it's also part of lifting part of the spirit of our community and being able to recover is by joining in engaging in outreach to others. Serving others,” said Harwell.
Harwell said the donations they receive in the iconic red kettles make up a third of their revenue each year. If you’re using curb side delivery or not going into the stores as much, Harwell said they’ve made giving even easier.
"We really think this year those virtual opportunities the apple pay and google pay that folks are just able to tap the sign if they would like or scan a QR code. We really think those are going to take off this year,” said Harwell.
If you don’t carry cash, you can use a credit card at the kettle for an easy, automatic, $3 donation.
