Christmas is a big day for giving back to those in need. Some homeless shelters around Tulsa want to make sure everyone has the chance to get into the holiday spirit.

One of those shelters lending a hand is the Tulsa Day Center near downtown. One of its mottos: “Where hope and homeless meet.”

Some of the services they provide are food and shelter but also offer recovery and housing programs.

The center has been able to prevent nearly 200 people, including 57 families, from facing homelessness.

The Tulsa Day Center would normally care for about 400 clients a day on average. The pandemic has forced the shelter to cut back to only 100 clients per day.

Filling The Void Tulsa also gave out breakfast to the homeless on Friday morning.

Tulsa Day Center executive director Mack Haltom said he wants to make the homeless feel like they are important this holiday season.

"It makes me feel like we are accomplishing our mission," Haltom said. "This is what we should be doing. This is what we do day in and day out."
