People in some parts of Green Country woke up to quite the shock Friday morning.
"I was actually really surprised,” said Nicole Loykasek. “I was not expecting it to snow. I was prepared for the Sunday, Monday snow."
Loykasek lives in the Stone Canyon area of Owasso and woke up to her yard covered in snow. Throughout the day, flakes filled the air, piling up to more than an inch.
"The kids are really loving the snow,” she said.
Meteorologists say this snow is something much more common in the Great Lakes area. Conditions were just right for Oologah Lake, just north of the neighborhood, to create lake effect snow to the south.
"It's been kind of a perfect setup, especially for Oologah Lake to get that lake effect snow,” said News on 6 meteorologist Stephen Nehrenz. “Not only to produce it but for it to happen for this long, extended period of time."
Nehrenz said for the past two days, winds from the north and northeast have perfectly passed over the full length of the lake. The warmer water creates clouds and, in turn snow, with this band only a mile or two wide.
