Firefighters Work To Help Tulsa Homes Stay Safe Following Fatal Fire

Firefighters went door to door through a Tulsa neighborhood Thursday after a fire killed a woman and her son earlier this week.

The Tulsa Fire Department holds its 'After the Fire' events any time there's a deadly fire to help prevent the tragedy from happening again.

Firefighters fanned out across the neighborhood east of Cooper Elementary, to make each home there a little safer.

They went door to door offering free smoke detectors to people who need them installed, like 94-year-old Earl Johnson.

"I'm glad they're doing that," Johnson said.

The one above his kitchen quit working and the replacement gives him back some peace of mind.

"I just appreciate them coming in, and I appreciate them giving me a smoke detector," Johnson said.

Just a few doors down, firefighters gave that same sense of security to Johnson's neighbor Sheila Wences.

"It's better to be safe than sorry. We were definitely happy to see them and have them do it for us," Wences said.

Johnson and Wences both remember Monday's house fire just blocks away that killed 70-year-old Donna Monday and her son Darien.

Andy Little with the fire department hopes visiting with each neighbor and installing smoke detectors prevents future losses and drives home the importance of fire safety.

"Because those neighbors did see those trucks, and those neighbors heard on the news, so it's fresh in their mind how dangerous fires are," Little said.

The fire department said it knocked on 200 doors and installed about 30 smoke detectors throughout the afternoon.
