If you're driving down Route 66 in Sapulpa, you just might notice something new. Something bright, bold, and big.

"When I was a kid, it was just a blank water tower, nothing special about it, so now to see something so beautiful is incredible," says Tawni Vickers with the City of Sapulpa.

Vickers says a new 60 foot tall mural on a water tower near Rock Creek was finished in May, but it couldn't be seen very well from the road.

"Until recently, it was completely covered with trees, so you couldn't see it, so we cleared those trees out so that you can actually see it as you drive by and stop in front of it and take your picture with it," Vickers said.

Now drivers will see Oklahoma's State Wildflower, the Indian Blanket, on a grand scale. Vickers says the mural is part of the Make Sapulpa Beautiful campaign and will hopefully soon be accompanied by picnic tables and some real Indian Blanket Flowers.

"So you can actually sit with them, take pictures, have a park bench, things like that," said Vickers.

After that, she says tourists can stop by another Sapulpa icon along the Route. Just down the street is the Heart of Route 66 Auto Museum, and they're thinking about doing a mural of their own.

"Even with a big giant gas pump out front and us telling them all the time that it's an auto museum, nobody knows what we are here," said museum executive director Lina Holmes.

She thinks a mural might change that.

"So, my whole goal is just to write auto museum and make it pretty on the side of that wall out there that faces South," Holmes said.

She says folks visiting the museum are always asking about other attractions in the area, and she's happy to add the new mural down the street to the list.

"It's a great place for a photo and it's just really really beautiful. They did a great job," said Holmes.

The city hopes to also revitalize nearby Reynolds Park.
