If you like fall weather, you’re going to love today. We’re starting this morning with a surface ridge of high pressure near and west of the metro. This will allow for clear sky, mostly light north winds for the morning hours, and cool temps to populate the entire northeastern Oklahoma region. The metro should bottom out in the lower 50s with several locations surrounding Tulsa dropping into the upper 40s for the morning hours. Plenty of sunshine and north winds will keep the nice fall weather for the afternoon with readings reaching the mid to upper 70s for Eastern OK, with the metro nearing 80 for the high. North winds may briefly pick-up around the 10 to 15 mph range by early afternoon before diminishing quickly around sunset. South winds should gradually return Thursday and Friday with a modest warming trend for afternoon highs. A weak boundary may skirt far northern OK Friday evening into early Saturday morning, but the data is inconclusive with the positioning of some important features across the Great Lakes area that would influence where the front could be positioned. Even if it arrives, the only influence will the wind direction for a few hours late Friday evening into the first part of Saturday morning.
Weekend temps are expected to climb back into the upper 80s and a few lower 90s, including the metro before experiencing more lower or even mid 90s Sunday into early next week. Unfortunately, the pattern continues to suggest dry weather for the short term. While this is great for outdoor activities, drought conditions are continuing to worsen. Fire spread rates will also be more concerning, especially Sunday as gusty southwest winds return.
The mid to longer range data in the global models are trying to resolve a potential southwestern U.S. cutoff low for early next week. This could bring us a few showers or storms for the middle of next week but for now, confidence remains too low to add any real pops to the forecast.
Enjoy this nice preview of fall weather. The Autumnal equinox occurs today at 2:20 pm central. The weather and the calendar will match up!
Thanks for reading the Wednesday morning weather discussion and blog.
Have a super great day!
