Tulsa's Greenwood Rising is getting national attention after USA Today named the museum as a finalist for its "Best New Attraction" competition.

Gathering Place won that award in 2019. Tulsa's Greenwood Rising is one of 20 finalists for USA Today's Best New Attraction competition.

Interim Executive Director Phil Armstrong said this isn't much of a surprise to him.

“It's a wonderful, wonderful accolade, but also there's a part of - I knew this was gonna happen,” Armstrong said.

While the museum was closed Tuesday for regular maintenance, the words left behind from visitors who have donated, tell the story of the attraction the museum has already drawn from across the country.

“From Las Vegas, Nevada, thanks for keeping history alive,” Armstrong read from one note.

In the short time the museum has been open to the public since August, people have come to visit from nearly every corner of the nation.

“This person’s from Wichita, Kansas. 'Beautiful museum, my third visit,'” Armstrong said. “Portland, Oregon: 'Tragic but wonderful museum. I'm going to tell my family and friends to come visit and never forget Black Wall Street.'”

Armstrong said when people come to Tulsa to visit Greenwood Rising, they are also taking time to see other landmarks in Greenwood, like the John Hope Franklin Reconciliation Park.

"That park's been in existence now almost 11 years and people are now coming to see it for the first time because rising tides lift all ships."

Now, the museum hopes those who left their reviews in handwritten notes, will go online and vote.
