Some Green Country sandwich shop owners said they suddenly cannot order the dough they need to make their bread. The restaurants have no idea how long the problem will last.
Bill and Ruth's on 15th Street said the Tulsa baking community has been supportive this week. While they're not using a local bakery right now, the owners said there might be one that can help meet their sandwich needs. Any way you slice it, change is coming to Bill and Ruth's.
"Unfortunately I can't make sandwiches without bread,” Owner Jeff Kuykendall said.
Kuykendall said he cannot order any small or large, wheat and white dough from Euro Pastry right now.
He and his wife Ayschia are working on what to serve going forward.
"So this is the product that everybody's known for 20 years…It's kinda sad to see it maybe be the last tray I pull out for some time,” Kuykendall said while pulling bread out of the oven.
Bill and Ruth's said after about a month of inconsistencies with the bread not rising properly, a complaint was filed with Euro Pastry.
Bill and Ruth’s on Friday received an email that included a Euro Pastry document, saying, "... the following items will be on hold effective immediately and until further notice," listing the products Bill and Ruth’s buys.
While Bill and Ruth’s locations are independently owned, the Kuykendall's said the other locations also order bread from Euro Pastry.
Giant Subs in Owasso said it is dealing with the same problem. Owner Amy Livingston has enough dough in the freezer to last about a week.
"It's stressful. Because this is my bread and butter – literally,” Livingston said.
She plans to sample a substitute next week.
"I'm not gonna compromise the quality of our bread,” Livingston said. “So if the sub is not amazing then I won't serve it."
Livingston said Giant Subs may end up serving only salads and wraps, until the dough they are used to, can go back in the oven.
In an email, Euro Pastry said all of its manufacturing plants are running well. It said, “We periodically discontinue or prioritize our product offerings, but since our factories are fully operating, customers do have the option to order alternate products that we manufacture.”
Both restaurants are asking customers for patience right now.
