Having a legacy is what every basketball player hopes to achieve. Tulsa’s Temira Poindexter's father, Ray, was a star in the mid 90's. Temira isn't that far behind him now.
The forward from Sapulpa has not only been the spark for the Golden Hurricane offense this season, averaging 12 points a game, but was also named the AAC Freshman of the year.
"The impact that she has made with our team has been incredible. She steps on the floor and she does so many different things for us. She is very versatile on the offensive end of the floor and very good on the defensive end of the floor, and she has battled some really good players this year and the growth she has had this year is tremendous," said TU Head Coach Angie Nelp.
Her dad Ray also played a big role in her development. He suited up for two NCAA tournaments for TU in the mid 90's. Their conversations of the court have made her the star that she has become.
"He is at every game. He is watching even if he is not there; he is watching and after every game he calls me and gives me feedback," said TU Forward Temira Poindexter.
The jump from high school to college can be difficult, but Temira hasn't missed a beat since leading Sapulpa to the state championship last year.
“She is young. She is just a freshman and knowing that she has that commitment to her training already, it means a lot,” said Nelp.
"At the end of the day, my teammates put me in this position. They always have my back. They give me the confidence, my teammates know it's going in so I know it's going in," said Poindexter.
