The Union High School Redhawks will play their first home game Friday night in their new stadium complex.
Just in time for the Friday night lights, people will fill the stands with the backdrop of brand-new additions. School leaders say the upgrade was needed since this is the first update to the stadium since the 70s.
"It's kind of been a long time in the making. It took us about 5 years from the time we designed and proposed what we wanted to do and passed the bonds, to finally now, completion of the project,” said Superintendent Dr. Kirt Hartzler.
The new jumbotron is ready to go for the first home game. Below the concourse, a 60-yard weight room with 38 racks allows 150 athletes to train at the same time. Plus, there are new wrestling rooms for boys’ and girls’ teams. Another feature is the new fine arts building with two rehearsal spaces for the band to practice.
Hartzler says the plan is for the multi-use facility to go beyond athletic events for things like concerts, movies, or church gatherings.
"We're very grateful again and we're happy to be able to show to our patrons and to our community members, and really to the larger Tulsa community, we're happy to showcase this facility,” Hartzler said.
Tickets are only $1 for Friday’s game against Westmoore at 7 p.m.
