Voters in Mayes County will decide whether liquor stores can start opening up for business on Sundays.
The staff at one liquor store says passing this proposition could help their small business stay competitive with bigger stores. Like other stores in the county, Pryor Liquors Beer and Wine is open six days a week with current law keeping their doors closed on Sundays.
“During weekends and holiday events, we have to be closed as to where Walmart, Homeland, other gas stations, and stuff that sell it can be open,” said Vendela Colbert, manager of Pryor Liquors.
The proposition needs only 50 percent of the vote to pass. Stores are hopeful it would keep them on an even playing field when big events come to town.
“I definitely don’t think it would be every Sunday that we’d be open,” said Colbert. “Definitely for holidays and when Rocklahoma and Born and Raised are here.”
Other liquor stores in the county tell News On 6 that even if the proposition were to pass, it is unlikely they will open because of staffing. Early voting is underway now.
The results of the proposition will be determined on Election Day next Tuesday.
