Groups of students from different local schools are working together to clean up their community. The students share a common interest in environmental sustainability.
In honor of Earth Month, environmental clubs from Booker T. Washington, Broken Arrow, and Union High Schools collaborated to help clean up a local creek.
Kayden Kehe is the president of the 'Sustainable U' group at Union High School.
"Sustainability is a passion of mine so I'd like to continue investing in these community efforts for my entire life, it's something I really care about," Kehe said.
This is the first time the group collaborated with another school. He says inviting students from other schools to help with a project like this is a way to do something nice to do for the community.
"These things might seem like they have a small impact, but they're really big. You have to take small steps towards sustainability," Kehe said.
Ghadeer Mohamad students hope to send a message by cleaning the creek.
"I just think it's really important to be conscious of the trash we leave on the floor and how we treat our earth because it will really affect us in the future," Mohamad said.
These students say littering creates problems beyond just being an eyesore. They say it harms our waterways and community health. Sam Williams, Union High School student, says he’s happy he got to be apart of the clean-up.
"It's really cool that we all came together to do this and pick up all this trash together," Williams said.
