The Tulsa Fire Department called in a reported theft of equipment to Tulsa Police, but firefighters responded first, surrounding the suspected thief until an officer arrived.
Tulsa Fire spokesman Andy Little said firefighters leaving Station 4 last Thursday night saw a man with fire equipment outside the building and called dispatch to report it. Firefighters left in the station heard the call and went out to confront him.
“He had around $8,000 of equipment in his hands, he was going to walk away with, which would have been useless to him” said Little.
The thief appeared as firefighters were concluding a training session, so more people were around the station than usual. “So they rush out to surround the guy,” said Little, “there was no confrontation, in fact, they said he was nice about it and said ‘I almost got away with it’ but obviously he’s not going anywhere with 30 firefighters surrounding him.”
Police returned the equipment and detained the man, according to Little.
