The first sign designating Route 66 as “Bike Route 66” was installed Tuesday in Tulsa.
The sign went up in front of Buck Atom Cosmic Curios on 11th.
“This is a big step forward, the Route 66 bicycle designation, for promoting bicycle tourism,” said Andy Turner, a member of Tulsa’s Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee.
He commutes each day on recently marked bike lanes on the highway through Tulsa.
The Department of Transportation is manufacturing the signs, and plans to install approximately 400 of them through the state along Route 66.
‘We're making sure we have proper signage around Oklahoma to designate these bike trails,” said Lt Governor Matt Pinnell. “As well as fixing roads, especially in rural Oklahoma, rural two lanes, making sure we have proper shoulders.”
The signs are part of the push to promote Route 66 tourism, before the highway Centennial in 2026.
“This is just one more example of embracing every mode of transportation that people want to experience the road and saying Tulsa welcomes you and Oklahoma welcomes you," Ken Busby, a member of the Tulsa Route 66 Commission, said.
