After several boat collisions and a boat explosion left people injured this weekend, the Grand River Dam Authority wants to remind everyone that safety should be their number one priority while out on the water.
"We have had a rough start to memorial day weekend," Justin Alberty, GRDA Spokesperson, said
Seven people are hurt after two different accidents this weekend.
One happened near Check-In Bay at Grand lake when five people were hurt after a boat exploded.
In another accident on Lake Hudson, two women were sent to the hospital after their boat crashed. GRDA is still investigating both incidents.
There are things people can do before hitting the water to ensure everyone stays safe, like keeping your cellphone charged and making sure everyone on board has a life jacket.
"They make all kinds of lifejackets these days that are more comfortable to wear than the bulky ones from years ago, so get something that fits you, that fits you today and get your child something that fits them today and not something they have to grow into," Alberty said.
Alberty also recommends having a designated boat driver.
"When you combine having the sun come down, the wave action, the crowds, just be prepared for anything in that environment," Alberty said. "You really need your sense about you so put somebody in charge to drive that boat that has all their senses about them."
GRDA offficers will continue to be out in full force all summer.
"A tragedy can happen in a hurry," Alberty said. "We have accidents, and our officers can check that and check for that. They are going to enforce the laws we have in place on the water."
If you have an emergency on the water, call 911. If it is a non-emergency, the GRDA have a non-emergency number which you can call at 918-256-0911.
