A former USL Championship winner has joined FC Tulsa ahead of a matchup with Loudoun United FC.
Detroit City FC member Tommy McCabe, who won the 2021 USL Championship with Orange County SC, joins FC Tulsa in a move that sends current players Darío Suárez and Brett Levis to Detroit, the club announced Tuesday.
“Tommy brings a championship pedigree to Tulsa,” said Head Coach Blair Gavin. “His ability to control the tempo of the game both with and without the ball will be helpful in playing our game. He will fit right into the group and help contribute to our overall team goals.”
In the official announcement, FC Tulsa said McCabe appeared in 11 matches for Detroit City FC this season. He had the second-most passes on the team (458) and he has an 85.5% passing accuracy over his four-year pro career.
McCabe was selected with the 29th overall pick in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft by FC Cincinnati and also spent time with North Carolina FC, Memphis 901 FC, and Orange County SC.
He also played in the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup against Croatia, according to the press release.
“I’m excited to be here,” said McCabe. “I believe FC Tulsa plays the game the right way and has a goal of being a winning team in this league. I hope to bring my experience in this league and contribute to the club’s goals on and off the field in any way I can.”
McCabe is available for selection in Friday's match at Loudoun United FC on June 9.
McCabe's acquisition also sends FC Tulsa's second-leading scorer in franchise history to Detroit.
Darío Suárez, who has 29 goals, 10 assists and 89 appearances for the club dating back to his debut in 2020, will be missed by coach Blair Gavin.
“Darío has brought a lot of joy to Tulsa with not only his quality on the field, but his goodness as a person,” said Gavin. “We wish Darío all the best in his next adventure and hope for continued success in Detroit.”
