Okmulgee Man Shot And Killed, Suspect Released On Bond

Police say 61-year-old Steven Watts of Okmulgee was shot and killed by a family member last week.

Records show the suspect, 36-year-old Blake Johnson, was charged in tribal court with homicide and has been released on a $30,000 bond. 

Police say after Steven Watts was shot, he drove away, crashed near the crime scene, and his car caught on fire.

A neighbor, Amy Crump, saw the smoke and ran over to help.

Police got a call about shots being fired, then moments later, a car crash on South Florida Avenue in Okmulgee on Wednesday, Dec 13.

"We saw a big cloud of smoke that wasn't normal," Crump said. 

Amy and her daughter went to the car to help him get out and call 911, and then it caught on fire.

When they got him out, they asked him his name.

"My daughter asked him, is that your name? And he said that guy's name again, and he shot me. That's when we saw one bullet wound that went in, and it looked like it went out," said Crump.

Police say Blake Johnson and Watts are related by marriage and got into an argument, and that's when Johnson shot Watts.

Watts died the next day.

"He seemed like he was a nice guy as far as you know, just saying hi, and how you doing,” Crump said. “He seemed like a real nice guy. I noticed his grandkids loved him."

Johnson was taken to Okmulgee County Jail and has since posted a $30,000 bond and been released. 

Johnson is charged in Muscogee Nation district court with Homicide, aggravated assault, and unlawful use of a weapon.
