Ascension St. John will soon have a new way to detect cancer in patients throughout Green Country.
The hospital system is going to use a new mobile PET/CT scan to save even more lives.
Ascension St. John said this advanced technology is one of the first available in Oklahoma.
The mobile unit is used to find cancer in patients by taking pictures of the body.
The technology can track a patient’s disease through diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring after the treatment is done.
This camera is also capable of detecting lesions as small as four millimeters.
Nuclear Medicine Technologist Liz Stamile said neurologists or neurosurgeons can also use the mobile scanner for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson's patients.
"You know, a lot of these patients, they are going through cancer treatment. It’s not easier for them to get around. So if we can make that burden a little bit easier, that’s going to be big for them," Stamile said.
Stamile said they will visit each location every two weeks to best meet the need of patients. The scan unit will be available starting January 15.
