A new $8.4 million housing development in North Tulsa is coming together.

The city councilor who represents the area says she hopes it to increase home ownership and build wealth.

There are several community partners responsible for contributing to this 8.4-million-dollar project. Leaders say Black Wall Street Square will honor the past while having a view of the future.

City Councilor Vanessa Hall-Harper, who represents North Tulsa, says the development is the vision of the late Terry McGee, a housing developer and community advocate who died in 2022.

Hall-Harper says this is a positive step to boost home ownership in the North Tulsa community and to address the housing crisis.

She said the land used in the development was purchased through eminent domain and the Tulsa Development Authority programs have historically harmed North Tulsa.

“So, these are other government programs that we know have done a disservice to Black communities throughout this country. I see this as a project that is going to return land that was once taken from the Black community to north Tulsa,” Hall-Harper said.

Phase 1 of the project is expected to be completed within 12 to 15 months and an additional 9 months for phase 2.
