Fugitive Suspect Crashes Into Truck While Eluding Police, Concerned Citizens Help Catch Him

A wanted fugitive is in the hospital after crashing into another vehicle on I-44 while crossing the Arkansas River on Friday.

Tulsa Police and emergency crews were on the scene after the crash which briefly delayed traffic while investigators sorted out the situation. According to TPD, their fugitive team spotted Elder Mejia just after 1 p.m. on Friday. Meija is wanted on a felony warrant for Domestic strangulation. 

Police said an officer pulled Meija over near 41st and Lewis but he got out of the car and confronted the officer. Meija then got back in the car and took off, leading officers on a chase. Officers stopped the pursuit when Mejia started going too fast and got onto I-44.

When Mejia got onto I-44 he hit a truck, sending it into the middle barrier, according to TPD. Mejia kept trying to drive and eventually jumped out and ran but police said that concerned citizens were able to stop Mejia and hold him down until police got there.

Mejia was taken to the hospital and police said he would be arrested for eluding, hit and run, and his warrant.
