A Broken Arrow couple’s drive turned terrifying when a police chase ended in a crash right in front of them.
The couple’s dashcam video shows the moment police surrounded the area as the suspect hid in the woods. Broken Arrow police say the suspect is a serial thief from another state and had a purse full of stolen credit cards, checks, and driver’s licenses. Witnesses said it was a scary experience, and they’re grateful no one was hurt.
A Monday afternoon drive home for Kenneth and Carol Baucum turned them into witnesses to a police chase.
“Right about the time we got through the intersection, a white SUV, I think it was a Jeep, pulled up on our right-hand side and hit the car in front of us, which rear-ended them pretty hard,” said Kenneth Baucum of Broken Arrow.
The couple says the runaway driver’s crash at 51st and Lynn Lane affected several cars.
“That sent them into the opposing traffic that was going southbound, pushing a gray SUV into the ditch, and then backing into a small, red car,” Kenneth Baucum said.
Broken Arrow police say the chase started at the Bank of Oklahoma on Hillside when the suspect, Amanda Williams, tried to cash a stolen $2,000 check at the drive-through and took off when officers tried to stop her.
Officers say the chase lasted just a mile and a half, but Williams reached speeds of 90 miles per hour in a 40-mile-per-hour zone. After the crash, Williams ran into the woods but was quickly arrested on multiple charges. Police say she is a serial thief with a driver’s license from Georgia.
“When officers located her purse, they found stolen credit cards, debit cards, checks, driver’s licenses, and security cards belonging to other people,” said Ethan Hutchins of the Broken Arrow Police Department.
The Baucums say their video has been viewed almost two thousand times, and they hope it’s helpful.
“I shared it on social media because I knew there were a lot of people involved in that incident … I know that people are going to have to call their insurance company or their families or their doctors, even,” Kenneth Baucum said.
“We were just thankful we weren’t involved. God was definitely protecting us,” said Carol Baucum.
Police say Williams also had more than 12 ounces of Fentanyl on her. Detectives will be contacting other jurisdictions based on the stolen items they found in Williams's purse.
