A temporary shelter in eastern Oklahoma for hurricane evacuees is now closed.

Volunteers at Camp Gruber said goodbye to the last 10 hurricane survivors Thursday morning. Camp Gruber, in Muskogee County, was the temporary home for more than 1,800 evacuees, for more than a month.

Most of the evacuees were forced out of New Orleans by the floodwaters after Hurricane Katrina.

The Red Cross says many have gone back home or are now staying in temporary housing elsewhere in eastern Oklahoma.

Now Camp Gruber will be restored to its normal mission, a training ground for the Oklahoma National Guard.
