An Orange Barrel Alert for drivers in downtown Tulsa:

On Monday Oct. 5, crews begin a project to extend West Fifth Street between Denver and Elwood.

The new concrete road will be built on the Civic Center Plaza level over the existing parking garage. Along with building the new street, crews will also reinforce the plaza and support columns.

The street will end in a roundabout at Elwood that surrounds the stairway to the parking area. A new traffic light, street lights and barriers are part of the nearly $6 million project.

"It's going to be very safe, not only for the pedestrian, but also vehicular traffic,” City of Tulsa’s Paul Zachary said.

The project also will give emergency vehicles easier access to the Tulsa County Courthouse, Central Library and the Aloft Tulsa downtown hotel.

The work is supposed to be finished next spring to coincide with the opening of the renovated library.
