A Muskogee family is looking for answers after they say their daughter was so badly injured at her daycare she had to have plastic surgery.
The girl’s family received a report from DHS that says any allegations of abuse or neglect are unsubstantiated. However, DHS says this is just half of their report and they are still looking into Champions Childcare Center.
Attorney Steve Money says the 6-year-old girl might have permanent nerve damage and may not be able to smile normally ever again.
“You want to say she bumped her head against another kid? I mean, come on,” said Money. “A daycare center has an obligation to keep your child safe, and clearly, they didn’t do that.”
He says the daycare said several kids were playing and two of them bumped heads.
DHS and the Muskogee Police Department are investigating.
Money says the DHS report given to the girl’s mother says there’s not enough evidence to say any abuse or neglect happened.
“To look at this child and say it’s unsubstantiated, that just defies logic,” he said.
DHS says these findings are from Child Welfare Services, but they say Child Care Licensing is still looking into the issue.
The licensing branch decides if any requirements at Champions have been violated.
Money says the family just wants an explanation.
“We weren’t there. We don’t know,” he said. “But something happened, or the child wouldn’t look like this. Let them explain it.”
Champions Childcare Center did not want to comment, but they did say earlier in the investigation that it was an accident.
The Muskogee Police Department says when their investigation is complete, they’ll give their report to the District Attorney’s Office.
