Muskogee Schools Superintendent Clarifies District's Fines For Absences

Muskogee Public School's superintendent is trying to clear up some confusion about fining students for being late or missing school.

Superintendent Dr. Jarod Mendenhall posted a letter on the district's Facebook page, saying they will not fine students for unexcused tardies or absences.

In his letter, Dr. Mendenhall says during the first week of school, principals went over school guidelines of the attendance policy.

He says state law clearly states parents or guardians are responsible making sure their child attends school or face fines through the legal system. 

He says the state's fine for the third offense and any after is as high as $250.

Dr. Mendenhall says due to low attendance last year, principals told the students about the fines. 

In the letter, Dr. Mendenhall says, "We understand as educators that students must be in school every day to obtain the proper skills needed to be successful academically.  Therefore, student attendance has become one of our highest priorities for the 2018-2019 school year."

He added the districts effort to reinforce the importance of student attendance was communicated in a way that caused more confusion.
