Tracking More Rain Friday Across Eastern Oklahoma

Our unusual upper air pattern for August will continue with additional storm chances for the next few days before a stout cold front passes the area Sunday night into Monday ushering drier air into the state for a several days next week.  A few storms will be near the region (metro) this morning before moving into far eastern Oklahoma and northwestern Arkansas over the next few hours.  These are not expected to be severe but will produce pockets of heavy downpours, winds near 30 mph in spots and some cloud to ground lightning.  The coverage will be spotty, but you may run into one of these through the early morning hours.

Later today additional scattered storms will be possible along or south of Tulsa metro where a weak boundary will be stalling.  I would anticipate this boundary closer to the I-40 region than the metro, but I’ll keep a slight chance for a metro storm this afternoon as well.  A few may again be strong to severe with damaging winds and heavy rainfall threats.  We may stay in a brief lull Saturday, but I’ll keep a slight chance of storms for this period before a stronger disturbance nears with a high coverage of thunderstorm activity Sunday.  Pockets of moderate to heavy rainfall will remain with the Sunday system but the overall severe weather threat should remain low.

As the main upper level trough clears the area Monday, much lower dew point temps are expected to move from the Missouri Valley into northeastern OK Tuesday through Thursday.  This will knock the heat index values down to only a few degrees above the daytime highs which will be in the mid-80s Monday and Tuesday and into the mid to upper 80s Wednesday.  The morning lows will be dropping into the lower to mid-60s Tuesday and Wednesday morning with very pleasant conditions by August standards.  Only the EURO brings another system into the state Wednesday with a few showers or storms.  We’ll keep this out of the forecast for this update.

Temperatures this afternoon will move back into the upper 80s and lower 90s with heat index values around 100 to 107 for some locations, more so across the southern third of the area.   Temps this weekend will start in the lower 70s with highs in the lower 90s Saturday and into the lower to mid-80s Sunday before the rain arrives bringing the temps down into the upper 70s in rain cooled pockets.
