M&M MATHEMATICS
For an extra math lesson, consider predicting how many M&M’s will be inside the bag OR how many green M&M’s will be inside the bag. Allow time for them to graph their answers using graph paper. Then it is time to verify all the predictions. Empty the M&M package into a large bowl. Allow the children to count the M&M’s. Which student came closest to the correct number of M&M’s?
You can also graph the M&M’s by color. Consider this easy way to make an M&M graph: use a long strip of Scotch tape sticky side up. Lay the M&M’s out on top of the tape. They will stay in a visual line much easier. Children can easily see which colors are the most frequent and also which colors are the least frequent. They can then write mathematical statements using the < and > symbols.
