Ingredients:

  • Pretzels—either traditional shaped or square
  • White candy melts found at Michael’s or Hobby Lobby
  • Green M&M’s
  • Parchment Paper
  • Paper plate

Instructions:

  1. This is a microwave recipe because many public and private schools have easy access to microwaves.
  2. Place parchment paper over a paper plate.  Lay a few pretzels on the plate.  Place the candy melts on top of the pretzels.  Microwave for 10-15 seconds. Then test the candy melt to see if it is soft.  If not, microwave again for another 10-15 seconds.  Each microwave seems to be different.
  3. When the candy melt has softened, put a green M&M on top.  Be sure to push the M&M into the candy melt.  Allow time for the finished product to cool completely before eating.  It should look like the green M&M is yolk part of the egg with the candy melt resembling the cooked egg white.
  4. This is a fun and easy project for classroom teachers or parents to make with the help of their students or children.

M&M MATHEMATICS

For an extra math lesson, consider predicting how many M&M’s will be inside the bag OR how many green M&M’s will be inside the bag.  Allow time for them to graph their answers using graph paper.  Then it is time to verify all the predictions.  Empty the M&M package into a large bowl.  Allow the children to count the M&M’s.  Which student came closest to the correct number of M&M’s?

You can also graph the M&M’s by color.  Consider this easy way to make an M&M graph:  use a long strip of Scotch tape sticky side up.  Lay the M&M’s out on top of the tape.  They will stay in a visual line much easier.  Children can easily see which colors are the most frequent and also which colors are the least frequent.  They can then write mathematical statements using the < and > symbols.
