Police say a Sand Springs man is dead after they say he was shot by a homeowner during a burglary Thursday evening.

The dead man is identified as James Edward Patterson, 37 of Sand Springs.

Sand Springs Police Captain Todd Enzbrenner said at 9:36 p.m. officers were sent to a home in the 100 block of North Franklin about a first-degree burglary.

The homeowner told police he had shot a man and was detaining another after the pair had broken into his residence.

The second man was identified as Brandon Lee Gray, 18, also of Sand Springs.

Captain Enzbrenner says Patterson's body was found outside the home's back door and Gray was taken into custody.  The homeowner was interviewed and released.

Police say the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is currently processing the scene and are interviewing Gray as well as looking for additional witnesses.

Captain Enzbrenner says after their investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the Tulsa County District Attorney's office for review.
