A man accused in a deadly crash turned himself in at the Tulsa County Jail. Justin Brummett is now out on bond, facing a manslaughter charge.
Parents of the teenage boy killed in the crash spoke out about their son. Austin Crawford's parents said that given the choice between hanging out with his friends or being with his family, Austin would always choose his family.
They said he was a light in every room he walked into and went out of his way to do the right thing.
"I [said] I love you, goodnight. ‘Love you too dad.’ And that was the last conversation that I got to spend with him," said Austin’s father, Billy Crawford Jr.
He and Andrea Cole are divorced now, but sitting side by side they face an inescapable grief - the loss of their 18-year-old son, who died in an April car accident.
"He was…four days away from prom. He would've graduated in three weeks and then, from there, he was going to start school to become a pharmacist," Cole said.
Police said Brummett, 24, crossed the center line on 86th Street North near Sperry one foggy morning and hit a pickup truck head-on. They said the driver of that truck, Crawford, was thrown out.
Two women who saw the crash ran to help.
"He told them my phone number and they called me and told me. I laid my hands on him and I started praying over him just telling him it was going to be okay," Cole said.
Crawford died at the hospital.
"He was the most loving, amazing child," Cole said.
For the last six months, Crawford’s parents have had to learn to live again without their son, who they said was a gentle soul who always put his family first.
"He just loved the old stuff and how he was an old soul in a young body. He took the best out of everything. He made the best out of everything," Crawford Jr. said.
Brummett turned himself into police Friday morning. He is facing a first-degree manslaughter charge.
"His death was senseless, there was no reason for it whatsoever. I hope that responsibility can be taken," Cole said.
Since Crawford died, his mom has been writing messages to him on his Facebook wall. She gave permission to share some of so the community could learn more about her son.
