Two Muskogee women accused of abusing a 5-year-old boy are on their way to prison. Rachel Stevens and Kayla Jones both pleaded no contest in court Friday, September 15.

A judge sentenced them to 20 years in prison, but they could end up serving less time.

Stevens is the 5-year-old boy's mother; Jones is his stepmother. They're accused of physically abusing the boy for several months. When they were arrested in January 2016, Muskogee police said what happened to the boy was not just abuse, but torture.

An affidavit says the boy told investigators he'd been tied up, duct taped, then locked in a room while both women hit him all over with a belt. He said his mother also hit his hand with a hammer, and his step mom kicked him in the groin so hard he bled.

Police said his trauma was so severe he even suffered strokes.

Stevens and Jones will have the opportunity to come back in front of the judge after one year for him to re-evaluate their sentence.  District Attorney Orvil Loge says they came up with that plea agreement because it was in the victim's best interest.

"We would have liked to see more time, but in the end, it's not about us, it's about the victim. And that deal was made for him," said Orvil Loge, Muskogee County district attorney.
