After a discussion that stretched more than five hours Wednesday night, the Tulsa City Council is considering a temporary ban on dollar stores in north Tulsa.

The council finally decided that a dollar store moratorium is going back to committee.

The city council is also changing the language so that it only applies to District 1.

Several councilors could not get behind a city-wide moratorium but said they may support one that's limited to District 1.

District 1 Councilor Vanessa Hall-Harper has been arguing for months that her community wants grocery stores with access to fresh produce and meats, not dollar-type stores.

She believes this moratorium will lead to better food options, and while some are in support, some say this isn't the way to attract grocery stores.

"We need to focus on the real issues, and that is having quality grocery stores in our community," said Mareo Johnson. "That's what we need to focus on - the right methods."

The ordinance has to go through a committee before it comes back to the full council for a vote.
