The Wagoner County Sheriff's Office is investigating after two bodies were found inside a home that burned in the Lake Crest area of Wagoner County Sunday morning.
Deputies and firefighters responded to the Lake Crest area around 10:30, July 2 for a structure fire call. A family member reported a mobile home fire and said the person who lived there was possibly inside, said Wagoner County Deputy Nick Mahoney.
When investigators first arrived, they thought they were coming to put out a fire. That changed quickly when they found two bodies in a back bedroom.
"We don't know whether the deaths were caused by the fire or whether there is some other reason for the deaths," Mahoney said. "We are investigating it as being very suspicious."
Neighbors said they saw a few cars speeding down the road from the dead end where the mobile home is located. Moments later, they said they saw huge clouds of smoke and fire.
"There's lots of speculation that there may be some foul play, but at this point in our investigation, we're investigating it as any found body - any body found in the county," he said.
Shirley Criss lives nearby.
"We seen it when it was flaming real high, and it was black, black smoke," she said.
The Oklahoma Fire Marshal's Office and the Oklahoma medical examiner's office are en route to the scene. Investigators said they can't determine whether the victims are male or female.
Criss said she thinks one of the victims is her neighbor.
"He was very quiet," she said.
WCSO has also requested the assistance of the OSBI to investigate the scene, Mahoney said.
Neighbors said whatever the cause of the death it has rattled their nerves, and they hope investigators get to the bottom of it.
