Tulsa Students Learn How To Stay Safe To And From School

Children at a Tulsa elementary school spent Tuesday morning learning how to stay safe while walking or biking to class.  

 "We hear about distracted driving but we have nowadays distracted walking," said Beth Washington with Safe Kids Tulsa.

Safe Kids Tulsa took its safety lessons to Tulsa's Boevers Elementary School Tuesday morning. Program Coordinator Beth Washington says it's important to teach kids while they're young, especially this generation.

"I think my five-year-old knows my phone better than I do and I have to remind both of my kids, you know, to pay attention to their surroundings and what they're doing," said Beth Washington.

Safe Kids says 16,000 kids are hit every year by a car in the U.S. and they don't want these kids to become another statistic.

The group used creative means to grab the kids' attention, like skits

And a Tulsa firefighter performed some magic tricks.

"Let's hear you guys say 'always wear your helmets when you ride your bike.'"  Students: "'Always wear your helmets when you ride your bike.'"

Washington says many kids have heard a lot of this before.  But it's important they never forget these safety rules on their. walk or bike to school.

"As parents, sometimes, we don't know anything but when it does come from someone else, it hits home," said Beth Washington.
