Police have arrested an ex-convict after the assault on a woman early Friday became Tulsa's 54th homicide of 2016.

Sgt. Dave Walker says they taken 30-year-old Darryll Reed into custody in connection to that homicide,

He says at about 7:45 a.m. Friday, police were sent to an apartment in the 1000 block of East 61st Street.  Walker says Darryll Reed had called his father saying he had killed his girlfriend and was going to kill himself.

Officers arrived, met Reed at the apartment but refused to let them inside.  Once inside, police found a 41-year-old victim in critical condition with a head injury.  EMSA took the victim to the hospital.

Walker said Reed was interviewed and arrested on a complaint of domestic assault and battery.

Early Saturday, the hospital told police the victim had died and Sgt. Walker says they upgraded Darryll Reed's complaint to first-degree murder.

Records show Reed was released from state prison in January 2016 after serving less than four years of a ten year sentence out of Mayes County for a conviction of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

Jail records show Darryll Reed is being held without bond.
