According to a new study, Oklahoma is the third most expensive state for car insurance, and Tulsa has seen several jumps and dips in rates.

The study by The Zebra looks at factors impacting insurance rates using pricing data from the past five years looking at common variable – state, age, gender, financial behaviors and more.

Its study yielded Oklahoma's average annual car insurance premium is $1,989, with Tulsa residents paying more.

According to the study, the average annual premium for the Tulsa metro area is $2,126; Oklahoma City pays $2,099.

While factors like speeding, at-fault accidents and DUIs increase rates, The Zebra’s study suggests weather is a big reason why Oklahomans pay so much for coverage.

Expert Neil Richardson said over the last five years Oklahoma has been high among states with most hail damage and also noted the Moore tornadoes from 2013.

“Although other factors such as collisions and vehicle theft also impact rates, it seems weather has taken the greatest toll and caused the greatest fluctuation in auto insurance rates for folks in the Sooner State over the past five years,” Richardson said.
