The town of Okay honored its veterans in a big way on Saturday as it dedicated a 6-foot-tall, 3,750-pound granite monument.
Thanks to the Okay Preservation Committee, the town raised $10,000 to build the monument, which currently has 195 names on it. Okay, a town of a little more than 620 people, held fundraisers and made it a community effort to make the monument a reality.
“The Okay Preservation Committee would like to thank everyone that helped us make the veterans monument a reality,” said the OPC. “We are extremely proud of our small community. As we all know, this monument is a starting point to honor the veterans from our community. We have been overwhelmed by phone calls, private messages and regular Facebook posts, which is a good thing."
“We appreciate everyone wanting to submit names at this time for the next monument, but the way they are coming in is not possible to keep the list correctly. Please monitor our Facebook page and we will announce the time and structure of submitting new names. Once again, thank you for helping us make this monument a reality,” the group wrote on its Facebook page.
The dedication ceremony was held August 27, 2016, at the intersection of Highway 16 and 75th Street in Okay as an opportunity for the town to remember and support its military. The names on the monument span all the way from the Civil War to residents currently in military service.
Okay resident Dakota Haley designed the monument and Muskogee-based Kelly Monument Company made it.
