Eight-year-old Justin Evers has been appointed by Sunbeam Family Services and the Oklahoma Institute for Child Advocacy (OICA) as Oklahoma’s first Kid Governor.

“I think it’s great that I’ll have a chance to be the first Kid Governor of Oklahoma,” said Evers. “I want kids to know what’s happening in our state.”

During his term, he will address foster care, childhood poverty, early childhood education, mental health and other issues affecting the well-being of Oklahoma’s children.

Evers says he wants the state to set attention to the issues that affect kids in Oklahoma, specifically the foster care system.

On April 7, Evers will make his first public appearance as Kid Governer during the Sunbeam’s Shine a Light fundraising gala at the Chevy Bricktown Events Center.

Evers is a second-grade student at Rex Charter Elementary School and was one of 19 children ages 7-11 who submitted videos for the “Vote 4 Kids” campaign led by Sunbeam and OICA.

The Kid Governor’s term will begin April 2016 and end in November at the Oklahoma Kids Count Conference.
