Union Rugby players Tyren Al-Jiboori and Asa Carter excelled on the rugby pitch in state, regional and nationwide competitions.
And because the sophomore and junior stood out, they got the call to play for their nation.
"I expect to come out way better than I have before, show everyone what I got," said Al-Jiboori.
Both players will play for the USA Under-16 rugby team.
"It's amazing being able to represent my country and go out there, you know,” said Carter. “It's a dream going out there and representing something bigger than yourself."
The process of getting to compete for the USA started with a suggestion from Tyrun's brother Malon. He along with two other former Union players, Lorenzo Thomas and Chance Wenglewski, play for the USA on the Under-20 team. Both set a high precedent for other Redskins Rugby players to follow.
“My brother took me out to his first match and I saw the rules and how fun it was and how it was just different and I liked it,” added Al-Jiboori. “I was really happy because, you know, I've been working real hard and I just want to prove to my brother that I can compete with him when I get older.”
When Al-Jiboori and Carter represent the USA, they'll be playing seven on a side; it's called rugby sevens. It's a lot more difficult and a lot more selective.
"It's insane. Sevens is definitely a lot more fitness drive compared to 15's. It's a lot more quicker pace, fast pace, so you've got to amp yourself and push yourself harder than you did in 15."
They'll be ready to work hard to win for the USA in Las Vegas for the International Tournament starting March 4th.
