Nearly a dozen people are displaced after a big apartment fire near 21st and Garnett Monday. Firefighters told us a building of the Worthington Apartments is a total loss.

Firefighters say three adults and eight children were living in the building that was destroyed - and they are all safe.

A call about heavy smoke came in around 12:45 a.m. Firefighters got here just before 1 a.m., and it took them about an hour to bring the fire under control.

Once flames broke through the roof, firefighters could only try and prevent it from spreading to other buildings in the complex.

Fortunately, they did. Firefighters were at the complex for several hours. They had to shut off water to the entire complex at one point, but it's been turned back on.

The apartment manager tells us the people will have a place to stay, and the Red Cross is on scene offering help.

Officials are still working to learn the cause of the fire.
