Super Bowl 50 is in California this year. That’s where it was 36 years ago when a former Edison Eagle started in the big game.
"Always thought he wanted to be a football player when he was a little kid," said former Edison High School student, Mike Fanning.
The lineman went from the Eagles to one of the more storied names in college football, Notre Dame, and played with one of the more storied players in college football, Rudy.
"He was a good little guy, still talk to him some. We were national champions in 1973," Fanning said.
Fanning went to be a first-round draft pick by the Rams and eventually started in Super Bowl 14.
"We had really good teams there, good defenses. We went through a lot of different quarterbacks, Ron Jaworski was there, we traded him, that was a mistake," he said.
It just didn't result in a victory for the Rams, but at least Fanning has his memories.
"It was good for us because we played in the Rose Bowl. It's an honor. We had a lot of guys hurt that year and they all got healthy by the end of the year. We held them to 60 yards rushing, but we still lost."
Nowadays, Fanning works at TU in Special Administration and Operations.
"Help with operations, help raise money for them. Get cars for coaches, just whatever they need. I'm a local guy here and just helps get my kids through school, so that's a nice perk," he said.
But playing nearly a decade in the NFL isn’t bad at all.
