Oklahoma has hundreds of fire departments run by volunteers, people who work other jobs in addition to battling fires. These small departments often struggle to buy and maintain expensive equipment. One of those is the Owens and Company Volunteer Fire Department in Vera, Oklahoma. This group, founded by Chief Todd Owens, serves a large area, keeping rural farms and homes safe. Chief Owens has had many close calls over the years, but continues to keep his small department alive.
