Hold onto your hat, south winds will be howling about 20 to 30 miles per hour this afternoon. Granted - though those strong south winds will help warm us up, they will also create an elevated fire risk Sunday.

Even though soil moisture content is fairly high, the burning index today is considered elevated. The chance for fire ignition remains low, but with the wind speeds today and low 1-hour dead fuel moisture, a fire that is able to get going will have the potential to become out of control.

It’s something to just be aware of today.

Winds will remain strong overnight, and moisture will increase ahead of a quick moving system. A cool front will move through Green Country during the morning hours. With moisture increasing, there is chance for drizzle before the actual cool front makes it through.

The better chances of showers and where the deeper moisture is located, is across southeastern Oklahoma and along the Oklahoma Arkansas state line. Just a few passing showers are possible and the skies will try to clear out in the afternoon.

Temperatures will actually warm as the cool front approaches during the early morning because of southwest winds and then as the cool front comes through, winds will shift to the northwest and temperatures will cool a few degrees.

Don’t worry, as sun comes out in the afternoon, temperatures will warm again.
