Green Country got off to a very cold start Sunday. Temperatures bottomed out in the low teens for the metro and even single digit reading across Osage County. This is the coldest air we have seen this winter.
Mixing that cold dry air with a light wind made wind chill values dip below 0 degrees in some locations during the morning hours.
Highs this afternoon will struggle to reach above freezing, especially for locations that have snow on the ground from our winter storm yesterday. Winds will shift to the south tonight and then we finally see temperatures start to moderate on Monday.
Monday morning will be cold, but that is what we expect for mornings in January. Temperatures will be in the mid 20s with a light wind will actually feel like it’s in the upper teens.
For the afternoon, a little sunshine and a south wind can work wonders. Highs should reach to “normal” in the upper 40s which will be a good 15 degrees warmer than highs for our Sunday.
A weak cold front on Tuesday morning will only bring a north wind and a slight attempt at cooler daytime highs.
Over the next seven days, we have several chances for rain. Late Wednesday, an upper-level wave will swing by and bring in a chance for showers. Moisture will be slow to return before this wave, so chances remain fairly low.
The Gulf of Mexico will open up on Thursday, and moisture will surge in to set the stage for a stronger system to move through Friday into Saturday. A cold front could usher in cold enough air to transition rain into snow by Saturday morning.
EMSA advises that drivers pack extra warm clothing, blankets and food in case of a car breakdown. And be sure to keep your cell phone charged up in case you have to call for help.
Bring your outdoor pets inside Sunday or make sure they have a safe and warm shelter. Also, check on folks who may not have a heater or run their heater as this is some dangerously cold air.
