A man in New Jersey is facing life in prison after being convicted of murder this week in a case that involved a Super Bowl bet.
Eddie Roberson bet a friend $700 that the 49ers would beat the Ravens in Super Bowl XLVII. When the 49ers lost the game 34-31, the man who bet on the Ravens, Talif Crowley, went to collect his money.
Roberson didn't want to pay up though because he thought the 49ers had been cheated in the game, which involved a 34-minute power outage at the SuperDome.
Two days after the Feb. 3, 2013, game, Roberson approached Crowley, 38, on the street and shot him six times, Essex County prosecutors told NorthJersey.com.
"This was a particularly senseless murder of a man who was well liked in the neighborhood," Assistant Prosecutor Adam B. Wells told NorthJersey.com. "This defendant killed a friend rather than pay up on a friendly bet. I'm glad the jury saw it for what it was."
Besides the murder conviction, Roberson was also found guilty on a weapons charge. The 31-year-old, who's scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 22, had three prior felony convictions.
