On December 31, Baker Mayfield will lead No. 4 Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl against unbeaten No. 1 Clemson in Miami, Florida, and the Tigers have their eyes set on the junior quarterback.
Two days after winning the Burlsworth Trophy, Baker Mayfield was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year. Former OU quarterbacks that earned the honor in previous years include Sam Bradford (2008), Jason White (2003, 2004) and Josh Heupel (2000).
Mayfield finished the regular season with 3,389 passing yards, 420 rushing yards, 35 touchdown passes, seven scores and only five interceptions. He has been one of the nation’s top quarterbacks this year and many have taken notice.
The Sooner QB has proved to be a dual-threat, quick on his feet with an undeniable passing game. “[Oklahoma] is playing good as anybody in the country right now, maybe best of anybody in the country, so we know they’ll be fired up to play us and we will be too,” said Clemson Head Coach Dabo Swinney in a recent presser. “Their quarterback looks like Johnny Manziel running around out there. He’s a nightmare. He’s an absolute nightmare. We’ll have our hands full with that guy.”
