Our News On 6 cameras downtown captured video of a City of Tulsa security officer collecting money from parking meters, then, driving around without bothering to close the back hatch on the van.
The armed officer placed coin bins just inside the back hatch and drove a route through the Brady District with his door open.
A City spokesperson said it wasn’t standard procedure to drive without closing the door, but added the van being used was a backup to the regular vehicle.
In a statement, Michele Allen said:
“This is not the standard vehicle used for collection, as the actual vehicle for collection is in the shop and not in service. The minivan used yesterday is a standby vehicle and, unfortunately, was the second best vehicle the Asset Management Department owns. The department does not have a backup vehicle for collection nor do they have the budget to be able to purchase a secondary vehicle for collection. As for the collection practice, I was informed that the security officer collected several meters in a close area yesterday and with the appropriate vehicle, standard practice for collection is to secure the door on the collection vehicle.”
