Magnitude 4.7 Earthquake Rattles Tulsa Area

A powerful earthquake woke many people in eastern Oklahoma Thursday.

The U.S. Geological Survey says it was a magnitude 4.7. According to the National Earthquake Information Center, the quake happened at 1:42 a.m. and was centered about eight miles southwest of Cherokee in Alfalfa County in north central Oklahoma.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries from the quake, which was felt in Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Wichita and Kansas City.

Two hours later, the USGS reported a magnitude 3.1 earthquake at almost the same location in Alfalfa County. And at 6:03 a.m., the USGS reported yet another 3.7 magnitude earthquake in the same area.

National Earthquake Information Center geophysicist Randy Baldwin says Oklahoma has seen more than 20 magnitude 4 quakes this year.
