Oklahoma State defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah has been named a semifinalist for the Walter Camp Award.
According to the Walter Camp Football Foundation, “The Walter Camp Trophy is awarded to the outstanding player of the year who has exemplified the qualities of self-discipline, unselfish team play, desire to excel, mature judgment and respect for leadership. He must be a dedicated competitor who has made effective use of his athletic talent to enhance the great American game of college football. His standout performance on the playing field must be accompanied by an equally strong effort to contribute to the betterment of the life of all his fellow human beings. He must exhibit an awareness of the need to fulfill his role as a leader. He must espouse the ideals adhered to by Walter Camp, the 'Father of American Football.'”
The award is voted on by the 129 Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors.
Ogbah is a major factor for the Cowboys defense this year and is one of the nation’s best defensive forces. He currently leads the NCAA in active career sacks, tallying 26.0 sacks in his three-year career.
He’s also recorded 17 quarterback hurries in just ten games this season, breaking records at Oklahoma State. His 17 hurries are two times the amount of the previous single-season record and his 24 QB hurries have marked an all-time high.
Ogbah is one of only two defensive players up for the award, the other being Iowa State’s Desmond King. He’s also one of the two players listed from the state of Oklahoma alongside Sooner quarterback Baker Mayfield.
A list of five finalists will be announced on Wednesday, December 2, and the winner will be broadcast live on SportsCenter on Thursday, December 10.
