Police say a resident at a Tulsa assisted living center survived a suicide attempt Monday morning. They had initially said he had died, but later said he was still alive.

Officers said they got a report of a stabbing at The Parke Assisted Living Center in the 7800 block of 76th Street South at about 6:30 a.m.

The first officers on the scene heard shots fired and called for backup, thinking they had an active shooter in the facility.

Officers from several divisions responded and forced their way into the room once they had moved staff members and other residents away from the apartment. They found an elderly man with gunshot wounds to his head and body.

The Tulsa Fire Department and EMSA paramedics treated the man and police said he was in critical condition when EMSA took him to the hospital.
