Oklahoma Scouts Hike To Higher Ground At Flooded Philmont Ranch

Some Oklahoma Boy Scouts have been affected by flooding at the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico that killed one camper. The Tulsa-area Scouts with Troop 81 were able to hike to higher ground and are safe, according to reports. It's believed a Stillwater Scout troop may also have been at the massive ranch donated by Tulsa oilman Waite Phillips.

New Mexico State Police say one Boy Scout on a camping trip with his troop has died after he and three other teens were swept away in a flash flood.

The name of the victim has not been released.

Sergeant Chad Pierce says eight Boy Scouts, three adult crew leaders and a scout ranger were on a 12-day trek at the Philmont Scout Ranch on Saturday when the flooding hit.

Pierce says at about 4:30 a.m., floodwaters came through the canyon where they were camping and swept away four boys, all between ages 14 and 17.

Ranch employees rescued three.

State Police were called around 9:30 a.m. and a rescue team recovered the remaining boy's body roughly a mile from where he was swept away.

Authorities are not releasing the boy's identity.

The area is in northern New Mexico, near the Colorado state line.
